Brocade SAN Health – it rocks!

This fits into the category of oldie but a goodie….

Let me share with you a great tool that will make your life easier and won’t cost you a cent: Brocade SAN Health.

If you have used it then you already know this:   This is a truly brilliant tool.
And the original author at Brocade? An Australian!

Brocade SAN Health automatically discovers, analyzes and reports the critical characteristics of your SANs, including switch, topology, and performance details. Audit results are presented in standard Excel and Visio formats.   You can use run SAN Health over long periods to collect performance statistics and error counters, which makes it not only useful as an audit and report tool, but also as a diagnostic tool.

Do you want to see an example of what you get?   I have posted one here.  Its on my developerWorks files library.

And did I mention it’s free?  Download the installer from the following link:

Now if your a Cisco MDS user, don’t feel left out…   Brocade SAN Health now supports Cisco MDS switches, as well as Brocade and legacy McData switches.

Using the tool is relatively easy.   Just install it on your Windows workstation and work your way across the tabs from left to right (Site Details to Start Audit). You can see the tabs below:

There is plenty of help information, so if it complains, (especially in the pre-flight check), listen to what it says.    Once you kick off the Audit, the tool logs onto each switch and issues a great many commands to collect the detailed information needed to build the report. Once the audit completes you can upload the output directly to Brocade via HTTPs (or email it), as per the screen capture below:

After a few hours you will get an email from Brocade telling you to download the completed report, just like this one:

Now go to the Brocade website and look for My SAN Health Reports:

What you will get is a spreadsheet and a Visio diagram.  The spreadsheet is very comprehensive with multiple tabs.   As you can see in this tiny snippet, it correctly identified the Brocade model for each of my switches as well as the Cisco model:

The report contains a tab on every switch, including a tab for each of your Cisco MDS switches. This is very useful stuff.   What are you waiting for? Create a report today!

Brocade… I love this tool, never take it away (or make me pay for it).
