THE FOLLOWING BLOG ENTRY WAS MY APRIL FOOLS DAY JOKE FOR 2011.
PLEASE DONT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. #:-)
In a stunning pre-announcement, timed for the first day of the new month, IBM has revealed a remarkable new generation of Storage Systems for the 21st Century. By combining IBM System z with the innovative grid architecture used by the XIV, IBM has produced a new hybrid product: The System XIZ.
The System XIZ will use the integrated Linux engines of IBM’s System z mainframe, 96 cores running at an astonishing 5.2 GHz, to generate a grid, the likes of which has never been seen before on this planet.
As can be seen in this indicative diagram, the System XIZ will take a single rack System z and populate the entire lower half of the machine with high density XIV disk drawers.
Current applications being considered for the System XIZ include:
- A project to perform the calculations necessary for time travel (by circling around the Sun very quickly).
- A project to examine complex signals that emanated from the big bang (Project Destiny).
“I think there is a world market for maybe five of these computers”.
In an off the table quote, IBM did reveal concerns that the computing power contained within the System XIZ could possibly create rents in the space time continuum. For this reason the outer frame of each machine will consist of pure unobtainium.
Interesting times for all of us.
Happy April 1st.
